Cycas revoluta, commonly known as the Sago Palm or King Sago Palm, is a species of cycad native to Japan. Despite its name, it is not a true palm but rather a member of the cycad family, which is an ancient group of seed plants. Cycas revoluta is prized for its distinctive appearance, featuring a crown of dark green, feather-like fronds emerging from a stout, cylindrical trunk covered in rough, armor-like scales.
This slow-growing plant is popular in landscaping and as an ornamental indoor plant. It prefers bright, indirect light and well-draining soil. Sago Palms are drought-tolerant once established but should be watered regularly during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. They are sensitive to overwatering and may develop root rot if kept too wet.
Maintenance:
For Sago Palm (Cycas Revoluta) maintenance:
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light.
- Water: Keep soil consistently moist; water when the top inch is dry.
- Temperature: Ideal in temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C).
- Humidity: Prefers higher humidity levels.
- Soil: Well-draining potting mix.
- Fertilizing: Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer.
- Pruning: Trim brown or yellowing fronds at the base.
- Pest Control: Monitor for spider mites; wipe leaves regularly.
With proper maintenance, Sago Palm can be a long-lived and attractive addition to both indoor and outdoor spaces.
